An air fryer is the small appliance most people actually keep on the counter. It crisps frozen fries and nuggets in minutes, revives leftover pizza, and roasts vegetables and chicken without heating up the whole oven. That makes it one of the most-wanted holiday gifts every year. The catch is that many air fryers run too hot or too cool, cook unevenly, or come with cluttered touchscreens and coatings people would rather avoid. Bigger is not always better, either.

This guide is a research roundup, not a hands-on test, and we did not test these air fryers ourselves. We compared the current air fryer guides from Wirecutter (updated June 2026), Good Housekeeping (updated September 2026), America’s Test Kitchen (January 2026) and Serious Eats, read 2026 threads on Reddit’s r/airfryer and r/AirFryers, checked Amazon’s Best Sellers list for air fryers, and searched CPSC recalls and warnings. Our six picks are the Ninja Air Fryer Pro overall, the Cosori TurboBlaze for value, the Instant Vortex Plus if you want a window, the Ninja Foodi DualZone for families, the Gourmia GAF486 on a budget, and the Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro if you want a full countertop oven. Prices swing a lot from now through Black Friday, so always check the current Amazon price.

Best overall: Ninja Air Fryer Pro 5-Quart (AF141)

Check price on Amazon →

Who it’s for: Most people cooking for one to four who want the crispiest fries, nuggets and wings with the least fuss.

The Ninja Air Fryer Pro (AF141) is Wirecutter’s top pick for 2026. In its tests it heated quickly with no preheat, held its temperature well, and turned out the crispiest fries, the least-soggy nuggets and the best chicken wings of the group. The controls are a handful of physical buttons instead of a touchscreen, and Wirecutter’s panel of testers with different dexterity levels found it the easiest to use. The 5-quart square basket fits up to about 4 lb of fries, according to Ninja. It has four modes (air fry, roast, reheat and dehydrate) and tops out at 400°F. Ninja says the basket uses a PTFE-free “nano-ceramic” coating, and it sells replacement baskets and crisper plates, which many brands don’t.

There are trade-offs. Wirecutter measured it overshooting to about 430°F at its max setting, so turn the heat down for delicate foods like Brussels sprouts. It was also one of the louder models, and the warranty is a standard 1 year. In one r/airfryer thread, an owner returned a larger Ninja Pro XL because it was so loud. Expect roughly ~$90–$130. Check the current Amazon price.

Pros: Crispiest results in Wirecutter’s tests; fast heat with no preheat; simple physical buttons; replacement parts available; PTFE-free basket per Ninja.
Cons: Runs a bit hot at max; one of the louder fans; only a 1-year warranty; 5 qt is tight for big families.

Bottom line: The safest all-around air fryer if you cook for a small household and want crunch above all.

Best value and Amazon favorite: Cosori TurboBlaze 6-Quart Air Fryer

Check price on Amazon →

Who it’s for: Families and batch cooks who want a bigger square basket, adjustable fan speeds and a longer warranty for less money.

The Cosori TurboBlaze 6-Quart is the air fryer that came up most often in our research. Wirecutter names it the runner-up and says it cooked almost as well as the Ninja, Good Housekeeping calls it the best value on Amazon, and it was #1 on Amazon’s air fryer Best Sellers list when we checked. In 2026 r/airfryer and r/AirFryers threads, owners repeatedly call it the best bang for the buck, and say it runs hot enough for extra-crisp food and is easy to use. Good Housekeeping UK even names the TurboBlaze its quietest air fryer. It has 5 fan speeds, so you can drop the fan for light foods or bakes, a temperature range of about 90–450°F, customizable presets, a simple touchscreen and a 2-year limited warranty, the longest among Wirecutter’s picks.

There are trade-offs. Wirecutter’s tested unit had a PTFE nonstick coating, while the current Amazon listing advertises a PFAS-free ceramic coating. Check the listing you buy if that matters to you. Cosori doesn’t sell replacement baskets, according to Wirecutter. Chicken wings came out a little less crisp than the Ninja’s. Cosori recalled about 2 million older air fryers in 2023 over an overheating wire connection. The TurboBlaze was not part of that recall, but it’s a good reason to register any appliance you buy. Expect roughly ~$90–$130. Check the current Amazon price.

Pros: Roomy 6-qt square basket; 5 fan speeds; quiet; 2-year warranty; strong owner feedback and Best Sellers rank.
Cons: Slightly less crisp than the Ninja; no replacement baskets; coating details vary by version, so check the listing.

Bottom line: The best value for most families, and the one to buy if you want more room than the Ninja.

Best with a viewing window: Instant Vortex Plus 6-Quart Air Fryer with ClearCook and OdorErase

Check price on Amazon →

Who it’s for: Cooks who like to watch food brown through a window and want fewer cooking smells drifting through the house.

The Instant Vortex Plus 6-Quart won America’s Test Kitchen’s January 2026 air fryer review. ATK said it was the first model it had tested that lived up to an extra-large capacity claim, fitting four chicken cutlets, two 15-ounce bags of fries or a 4-pound whole chicken, while standing only about a foot tall. Serious Eats also names the stainless-steel Vortex Plus its best air fryer, and Good Housekeeping picks the Vortex ClearCook as its best value. The ClearCook version has a viewing window and OdorErase filters, six functions, and a max of 400°F. It ranked in the top 10 of Amazon’s air fryer Best Sellers when we checked.

There are trade-offs. ATK noted the basket liner can fall out when you tip the basket, so use tongs. Wirecutter found windowed air fryers let heat escape and dismissed some other Instant Vortex models for soggy nuggets. One r/airfryer owner returned a windowed Vortex for a strong smell when new and a crisper plate that lifted as it heated. Instant sells several similar Vortex models, so confirm you’re getting the Vortex Plus 6-quart with the features you want. Expect roughly ~$100–$160. Check the current Amazon price.

Pros: ATK and Serious Eats top pick; roomy for its height; window to check browning; odor filters; easy knob-and-touch controls.
Cons: Liner can slip out when tipping the basket; windows can cost a little heat; mixed owner reports on early smell.

Bottom line: Pick it if you want to see your food without opening the drawer, and like a fryer that fits a small chicken.

Best dual-basket for families: Ninja Foodi DualZone 8-Quart 2-Basket Air Fryer (DZ201)

Check price on Amazon →

Who it’s for: Families who want the main and the side ready at the same time, such as wings in one basket and fries in the other.

The Ninja Foodi DualZone 8-Quart (DZ201) is the air fryer Reddit owners recommend most for families. In a 2026 r/airfryer thread, one shopper who returned two other models said the two-basket Ninja was the keeper. It was slightly wider than a single basket but no deeper. Another commenter called it the safest all-around pick for 2026. It has two independent 4-quart baskets, each with its own heater and fan, six modes (air fry, air broil, roast, bake, reheat and dehydrate) and a range of about 105–450°F. Smart Finish times both baskets to finish together, and Match Cook copies settings across. It ranked in the top 10 of Amazon’s air fryer Best Sellers when we checked. Good Housekeeping UK also names a larger Ninja dual-zone model its best overall.

There are trade-offs, and testers disagree here. Wirecutter tested the DZ201 and found that neither basket ran hot enough to crisp as well as its single-basket picks. Each basket is only 4 quarts, so one large item, like a whole chicken, won’t fit. It also takes up more counter space. One owner of a larger Ninja two-basket model says cook times run a bit longer when both baskets are full. Expect roughly ~$150–$200. Check the current Amazon price.

Pros: Two foods, two temperatures, one finish time; very popular with owners; wide temperature range.
Cons: Each basket is only 4 qt; Wirecutter found it less crisp than single baskets; wider footprint.

Bottom line: Buy it if dinner usually means two things at once for three or more people.

Best budget pick: Gourmia GAF486 4-Quart Air Fryer

Check price on Amazon →

Who it’s for: Singles, couples, college students and anyone who wants to try air frying without spending much.

The Gourmia GAF486 4-Quart is Wirecutter’s budget pick. It heated faster and held its temperature better than the other inexpensive air fryers Wirecutter tried, and it made reasonably crunchy fries and nuggets and surprisingly crisp wings for an air fryer that usually costs about $60 or less. Gourmia told Wirecutter the basket is aluminum with a food-grade silicone nonstick coating, so it’s PTFE-free. The 4-quart basket suits one or two people.

There are trade-offs. The touchscreen is cluttered, and you have to tap one specific spot to wake it up. The beeps are loud. Temperature swings were bigger than with the pricier picks, so delicate foods need watching, and Gourmia doesn’t sell replacement baskets. The warranty is a standard 1 year. If you have a bit more to spend, the Cosori or Ninja is a clear step up. Expect roughly ~$40–$70. Check the current Amazon price.

Pros: Low price; good speed and crisping for the money; PTFE-free basket; compact.
Cons: Fussy touchscreen; loud beeps; bigger temperature swings; no replacement parts.

Bottom line: The cheapest air fryer we’d actually recommend for small households.

Best air fryer toaster oven (splurge): Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro (BOV900)

Check price on Amazon →

Who it’s for: Bigger households, holiday hosts and anyone who would rather have one countertop oven that air-fries, toasts, bakes and roasts.

Wirecutter makes a point worth hearing before you buy. If you have the counter space and the budget, a convection air fryer toaster oven cooks more evenly, handles more kinds of food, and tends to last longer than a pod-shaped air fryer. Its top pick in that category (updated September 2026) is the Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro (BOV900), and Serious Eats picks it too. It has 13 cooking functions, including air fry, toast, bake, roast, proof, slow cook and dehydrate, plus two-speed convection, a roomy interior of about 1 cubic foot and a range of roughly 80–480°F. That’s enough room for a sheet pan of wings or a holiday side dish while the main oven is busy.

There are trade-offs. It’s expensive and heavy, it takes more counter space than any basket fryer here, and Wirecutter notes the super-convection fan is loud. It also needs a short preheat and air-fries a little more slowly than a basket model. Expect roughly ~$300–$400. Check the current Amazon price.

Pros: Most versatile pick; cooks more evenly; big capacity for families and holidays; 13 functions; well built.
Cons: Expensive; large and heavy; loud on super convection; slower than a basket fryer for small snacks.

Bottom line: The splurge pick if you want one appliance to replace your toaster and air fryer, and sometimes your oven.

Buying guide: how to choose an air fryer

Golden french fries on a white plate, seen from above
Photo: J KREATOR / Pexels — spread food in one layer for the crispiest fries

1. Pick the right size, and don’t go too big. Wirecutter found 4–5 quarts is the sweet spot and calls 6 quarts about the biggest it recommends, because oversized baskets heat slowly and leave food soggy. A rough guide is 2–4 qt for one or two people, 5–6 qt for three or four, and a dual-basket model or air fryer toaster oven for bigger families.

2. Square beats round. A square basket holds more food in a single layer than a round one with the same quart rating. Food crisps best in one layer, so floor area matters more than height.

3. Basket, dual basket or toaster oven? A single basket is fastest and crispiest. A dual basket cooks two foods at once, but Wirecutter found each zone runs weaker. An air fryer toaster oven is the most versatile and even option, and it’s slower for small snacks.

4. Simple controls win. Testers and r/AirFryers owners agree that most people end up using just time and temperature. Presets that don’t know how much food is in the basket are, as Wirecutter puts it, little more than suggestions. Clear buttons or a responsive screen matter more than a long list of modes.

Square nonstick air fryer basket and crisper tray removed for cleaning
Photo: AirFryerFanatic / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0 (cropped) — a basket and crisper plate that come apart are easier to clean

5. Think about the coating and cleanup. Most baskets are nonstick, using either PTFE or a silica-based “ceramic” coating. To make any coating last, hand-wash the basket even if it’s labeled dishwasher-safe, skip metal utensils, and replace the basket once it’s scratched. If you’d rather avoid nonstick altogether, Good Housekeeping and Serious Eats both point to newer glass air fryers such as the Ninja Crispi, though Wirecutter found the Crispi awkward to use. Owners in r/AirFryers also suggest wiping around the heating element once it cools so grease doesn’t build up.

6. Check recalls and warnings. On October 15, 2026, the CPSC warned consumers to stop using Kalorik MAXX and MAXX Advance air fryer ovens with French doors. Their spring-loaded doors can snap shut on your arm while the oven is hot, and the brand’s current owner declined to recall them. Earlier recalls covered about 2 million Cosori air fryers (February 2023) and Insignia air fryers sold by Best Buy (March 2024). None of our six picks appeared in those notices. Look up anything you already own at CPSC.gov.

7. Use it safely. Follow the clearance in your manual so the vents behind and above the air fryer can breathe. Keep it off the stovetop and out from under low cabinets, and plug it directly into a wall outlet rather than an extension cord. Don’t overfill the basket. If you keep pet birds, be careful running a nonstick air fryer at its highest settings, because overheated PTFE fumes are dangerous to birds.

FAQ

What is the best air fryer in 2026?

For most people we pick the Ninja Air Fryer Pro (AF141). It was Wirecutter’s top pick for crisp results and easy controls. If you want more room for less money, choose the Cosori TurboBlaze 6-Quart. If you want a viewing window, the Instant Vortex Plus 6-Quart won America’s Test Kitchen’s review.

What size air fryer do I need?

For one or two people, 2–4 quarts is plenty. For a family of three or four, look at 5–6 quarts with a square basket. For bigger families, or to cook a main and a side together, consider a dual-basket model like the Ninja DualZone or an air fryer toaster oven like the Breville.

Are dual-basket air fryers worth it?

They’re popular with families because two foods finish at the same time. The trade-off is that each basket is smaller, and Wirecutter found the zones crisp less than a strong single basket. If you mostly cook one thing at a time, a 5–6 qt single basket is the better buy.

Air fryer or air fryer toaster oven?

A basket air fryer is faster, crispier and cheaper for snacks and small meals. An air fryer toaster oven is bigger, cooks more evenly, toasts and bakes, and tends to last longer, but it costs more and takes up more counter space.

Are air fryer nonstick coatings safe?

Most baskets use PTFE or a silica-based “ceramic” coating. Used within the maker’s temperature limits, experts quoted by Wirecutter see little cause for concern. Hand-wash the basket, avoid metal utensils, and replace it once the coating is scratched. If you’d rather avoid nonstick, look at glass models or a toaster oven with an uncoated pan.

Have any air fryers been recalled recently?

Yes. On October 15, 2026, the CPSC warned owners to stop using Kalorik MAXX air fryer ovens with French doors because of a burn hazard. Earlier recalls covered Cosori air fryers (2023) and Insignia air fryers (2024). None of the models in this guide were named. Check CPSC.gov for the latest.

How we picked

This guide is a research roundup for Home Upgrade Atlas. It isn’t a hands-on lab test, and we did not test these air fryers ourselves. Here is exactly what we checked in October 2026:

  1. Independent guides: Wirecutter’s “The Best Air Fryer” (updated June 22, 2026) and its air fryer toaster oven guide (updated September 2026), Good Housekeeping’s lab-tested air fryer picks (updated September 2026) and its best air fryers on Amazon, America’s Test Kitchen’s air fryer review (January 2026), Serious Eats’ 2026 air fryer picks, and Good Housekeeping UK’s 2026 air fryer rankings. We favored models that more than one source recommends, and we note where testers disagree.
  2. Real owner discussion: 2026 threads on Reddit’s r/airfryer and r/AirFryers about which air fryer to buy, Cosori vs. Ninja vs. Typhur, and which models lasted.
  3. What people buy: Amazon’s Best Sellers list for air fryers, checked October 20, 2026.
  4. Specs: capacities, modes and temperature ranges from Ninja, Instant and Breville product pages, retailer listings and the reviews above.
  5. Safety: we searched the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recalls and warnings for air fryers on October 20, 2026, and found the Kalorik MAXX warning and the Cosori and Insignia recalls described above.

We left out models that testers repeatedly found ran far off their set temperature, oversized baskets that reviewers said cooked unevenly, and unbranded air fryers without a clear safety listing.

Verdict

The best air fryer for you is one sized for your household, with a square basket, controls you’ll actually use, and a good track record. Match your priorities, then check the current Amazon price:

  • Ninja Air Fryer Pro (AF141): best overall, crispiest results and the simplest buttons.
  • Cosori TurboBlaze 6-Quart: best value, with a roomy basket and a 2-year warranty.
  • Instant Vortex Plus 6-Quart ClearCook: best with a viewing window.
  • Ninja Foodi DualZone (DZ201): best two-basket model for families.
  • Gourmia GAF486 4-Quart: best budget pick.
  • Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro: best air fryer toaster oven splurge.
